club history

The club has been around in its present form since the mid-eighties though I am told there was a bowling green at the current location pre-second world war.  The bowling green is currently accessed via the carpark of the now sadly closed Ship Hotel after which we take our club name...The Ship Hotel Overton Bowling Club.

The club membership represents a fairly wide demographic representing a cross-section of the area.  Currently there are around thirty active members [sometimes you have to nudge them to move though].  We are always looking for new members as this maintains a healthy and sustainable community club.

The club competes in local leagues fielding both A and B teams who play in the lancaster midweek bowling league on Tuesdays and the morecambe midweek bowling league on Wednesdays.  In addition there is also a veteran's team who play in the lancaster and district veteran's league on Thursdays.

The league normally commences in early April with games scheduled in some instances into September.  Due to the lack of available light, in the early and later fixtures games commence at 6-30pm and revert to the normal 7-00pm starts between May and July.  The Veteran's league commence their matches at 2-00pm.

Each of the different leagues are usually formed into five or six divisions based on a promotion and relegation system.  The club has a history of being successful in gaining promotion up through the divisions as well as a not-so-glorious history of the occassional relegation.

In addition each of the midweek leagues hold cup competitions which may be scheduled for Monday and Thursday evenings.  The club has been successful in winning one of these events.
